- In this Texas Landscape Painting, "Heartland,"
an original oil on canvas, I was trying a new medium. This was
the first time that I was able to just mix the palette, blend
the colors and have both the detail and the softness of line
to make the illusion of depth and atmosphere work in the image.
I wanted to complete the entire painting by blending the pigments
together in a wet-into-wet technique. In other words, I wanted
to complete the painting without glazing at all, all at once,
while wet--no subsequent layers. I still make my own medium,
paint wet into wet to make progress if not complete the painting,
then glaze for effect and touch up. It would be easiest to say
that this piece was about painting as much as subject for me.
In my technique many mediums can achieve both a virtually smooth
brushstroke free surface as well as impasto.
